And if I could give some advice, it would be to always listen with your ears, not your eyes and if you don’t hear or “feel” a difference, then ask yourself if it’s worth it, making that move/change or using that pluggin, if you should push it harder or just remove it.NOTE: Before proceeding with the installation steps, please verify your version of Reaper is supported: Supported Digital Audio Workstationsĭownload Slate Digital Connect from the following page: I’m not saying that this is what’s happening here (like I said, I haven’t watched it yet) but it could be.Īt the end, what matters is if people like how it sounds, not if we can or not hear some difference. Then, the guy in the video says “Wow, what a difference!” and even though people don’t hear a difference, because they don’t want to look bad, because they don’t want to be the only one who doesn’t hear the difference, they will agree and comment “Indeed, this is incredible!”. We see the lights or the waves or the lines moving and sometimes, even though it’s not doing anything (anything a human will perceive), because we “see” it doing something, we get fooled and we believe it’s doing something. The problem is that sometimes, especially when mixing in the box, we tend to apply a pluggin and “watch” it working instead of listening to what it’s doing. Try to make subtle changes, so that a track…and finally the song “feels” better but we don’t really know why. This is what a good mixer should try to do. Sometimes, we feel that something is different, something is better but we don’t really know why, we can’t hear where this difference comes from. The other thing is something that some people don’t like to hear…but it’s true! When I started to learn mixing, one of the first things that I learned, something that everyone always talked about was “hearing” VS “feeling”. So are you, by the way! And if you can’t hear a difference, then you can be sure that most of the people won’t, either. We are the sound engineers (or we want to become one), we have some experience with audio, we know more than the average listener. Was it my gear? Or is it me who doesn’t know what to listen to, where to focus my attention when listening to the track…? But then I realized this: if I don’t hear a difference, then most of the people who will listen to the song won’t hear it, either.
Not so much anymore but until not too long ago, I always felt bad when I watched a video and someone would apply a pluggin or do something and say “you hear that? Huge difference!” but I couldn’t hear a difference! I felt so bad and blamed myself for not hearing the difference. After reading the title, I had a vague idea about which pluggins he was talking about and before watching the video, just by curiosity, to see if I was right, I came here to read the comments, to see if someone would mention which pluggins he’s talking about…and I saw your comment.
